Last night I went to see American Gangster with 2 current and 2 former MTS (Ministry Training Strategy) guys for the bargain price of $10.

The film is based on a true story about Frank Lucas, an African-American ‘gangster’ and his life of heroin importation to America. Initially the film starts out fleshing out the main characters Frank Lucas, portrayed by Denzel Washington, and Detective Richie Roberts, portrayed by Russell Crowe, and it does this quite well. As the film progresses, it opens up more and more to the way that Roberts and the police work through their dealings with drugs, and the methods Lucas and other gangsters conduct themselves.

The end of the film rushes through what happened after the police busted Lucas, which is a little disappointing seeing as it doesn’t explain a lot and henceforth doesn’t continue to develop Lucas’ and Roberts’ characters enough to explain the quite surprising ending, however with the film being 156mins long, it is understandable…

I’d have to say it’s the best movie I’ve seen this year, and I highly recommend anyone to go and see it. There are some disturbing scenes involving blood, guns and drug use, so be wary of that and the language is colorful.

A great start to a year with movies with several good movies to come.
