CHONGLAND has officially been launched with the sending of CHONGLAND TIMES – EDITION 01 (viewable here) at circa 9:50PM this evening. After about an hour or more of digging around my email clients and lists for peoples email addresses I got the email out and there seems to be some response. Those that have responded, I thank you!! Look out for more to come!!!
CHONGLAND is planned to launch (again!!) on the 1st of January 2007.
So here’s whats been happening in the life of me: I’ve been scanning papers for jobs and writing the odd application from time to time… It’s actually pretty hardcore to apply for a heap of jobs… and it’s damned frustrating not hearing back after an application has gone in…. I’ve been trying to get my online portfolio online, but that’s slowed to almost a complete halt due to job apps, and a re-formatting of my computer. I still need to finish editing a wedding video as well…. Started on brainstorming an idea for the Ignite Film festival which I wanna do separate from the Se7en Samurai team, I’ll still be involved in their production, but I just had a nice idea for a video of my own… still need to play around heaps with the idea and run it few some people, and then think about how to go about actually acting and filming it out, but as an idea it’s pretty snazzy… Trying to develop myself in terms of how I deal with letdowns, insults, mockery and other negative things in general… Not working the best, but my ‘skin is starting to thicken” I think…. Been rather sporty also; played indoor soccer last night with some people from church. I managed to score our teams only goal and almost had a second one in the last 13 seconds of the first half. How do I know it was 13 seconds you ask?? (or maybe not….) Well someone wanted a sub and there was only 13 seconds left on the clock and I managed to race on the field, grab the ball, get round most of the opposition and shoot. Unfortunately it was my left foot and quite frankly that one just doesn’t work. And today I went to kick a Sherrin around with Matt Lee (AKA Fleaster) at the local oval… he was tired after about half an hour though…. Sometimes I’m amazed at how quickly peoples energy is depleted and I guess I thank God for the stamina and endurance that I have, or have been lucky enough to gain. It’s something I’d like to develop a bit more though…. Tomorrow sees more PTC and then Church, so things should be good there…. with any luck I’ll be able to get some words in with certain people, but no promises….
It’s been a draining few days, but it’s over and time to get back the unfortunate world of unemployment. Over Friday and Saturday I had the priviledge to go to Semi-Permanent to see and hear a bevey of talented designers and directors… The list of speakers goes:
- Revolver Film
- Ed Templeton
- Vice Magazine
- Qube Konstrukt
- The Wilderness
- Weta Digital
Quite a bit of talent there and some real inspirations, a few sad stories though, like a lot of the stuff that Ed templeton had to say kinda made me feel a bit sorry for him and made me realise how lucky Christians are, but also how sheltered they are. Best speakers for me were Resn and Qube Konstrukt, just cause they were the most relevant to my situation. TWiN were good as well and could well be a vision of my future. Today I headed in to Wesley Mission to ‘help out’ Fleaster with ‘Inspiration’ and have a bit of a Jam. Unfortunately it didn’t turn out the way I thought it would. You see, I thought that there’d be a bunch of guys and girls that are heaps interested in bboying and wanting to learn some stuff, guys that would really listen to you and take some direction. It turned out to be a few guys that are interested in bboying (kinda) well more breakin and popular tricks/moves. So the guys knew some stuff and just wanted specifics which they really don’t have the foundational ability for. Guys were even asking for stuff that I couldn’t do… Something on my brain at the moment is girls and matters of the heart. It’s a crazy thing and I have some form of a love hate ‘relationship’ with it. I want it real bad, but I don’t have the guts to go after it properly cause I’m afraid that I’ll get hurt. But then it hurts not to have it as well, but such is life and we really don’t have that much control over things, because God is always in control, he wants the best for us, and is looking out for out best interests and not our wants, which in the whole scheme of things is fantastic.
Things have been pretty stagnant, slow and slack over the last two days. Yesterday was almost a complete write off with pretty much procrastination and time wastage the whole day long. This morning was much the same, but I consciously decided to get up and out of the house for the afternoon and go and do some work where the self-distractions are less. Armed with about 7 reference resumes/CVs, an email from Mike Barry of , my latest sketchbook, several pens and a pacer, I headed off to Macquarie Centre to sink my teeth/hands into some design related work, both for getting me a job and improving my skills. Odd place I know, especially whenMultimedia usually consists of computerised stuff, but I actually managed to get a fair whack of work done. I proceeded to ‘The Loft Cafe‘ and 2 Lattes ‘later I’d gone through the CVs and found some good language to use and several pointers for structure and style, as well as planning some CHONGLAND extensions and refurbishments, including Jacques De and Lambs2Slaughter ‘mini-sites’. Big bonus was some of the company that happened to be at the cafe, let’s just say that she is real pretty and has a great smile. Luckily I got to have a short chat and that was expanded on/developed later on. The bad thing is that I’m struggling to get to sleep now, not sure if it’s the 2 Lattes’ or if it’s the great feeling that comes about when you talk to a nice person, but if this keeps up I might need some sleeping pills or something. All in all a good day that seems to be shaping up a great week to come. Props to all involved
So CHONGLAND is coming along fairly well. I’m happy with the current design, look and feel of things, but it has been a bit of a struggle. I’m utilising XHTML and CSS as the ‘coding technologies’ and I must say that these languages have changed quite a bit since I was at TAFE. The amount of things that you can do with them is incredible, and they’ve made other bits and pieces of HTML absolutely redundant. I’ve also had a dabble at some PHP with a lot of help from Mudweg. As it turns out, Internet Explorer doesn’t like certain transparent images, so I’ve found a lovely workaround on that, but I’m not sure how I’m going to implement it into this blog page…. Anyways, on Thursdays I’ve started the habit of going to ‘The Loft Cafe’, in Macquarie Centre in the afternoons, to go over what we did in PTC the night before. I seem to concentrate a bit better out where there is ambient noise(??) and less controlled distractions, plus the staff are especially friendly. Today I ended up there in the morning, after a haircut, but didn’t have the concentration to do a lot of Bible reading, so after a semi-solid effort, I turned to jotting down my CHONGLAND V2.0 ideas and by gum I had some good ones. They’re looking somewhat hard to implement, and I’d say the chances of me having them ready by the 16th are virtually none, but it’s somewhat of a project to upskill me in Flash and programming. Tomorrow sees a lot of travel organisation and general running about, but I also hope to have a crack at getting some forums up and running, so that when I launch this baby people may actually be able to interact somewhat with me and each other, and I’l also try to get some sort of little card published to hand around to friends and aquaintances so the know CHONGLAND exists. A bit of a techy yarn tonight, but for those that aren’t into all that techy stuff, here’s what happened in my day today. I had a nice haircaut today at ‘Hair After’ at Trafalgar Square in Marsfield by a lovely young lady Carissa. Not as friendly as my previous hairdresser, Sara, there, but nice enough all the same. Apart from drinking coffee, reading the Bible and designing in Macq centre, I collected my winnings on a scratchie, deposited a cheque, bought a pair of board shorts and had a nice chat with a girl from Church (hopefully many more of those to come). 3 Days to launch CHONGLAND and pack for Hong Kong, so looks like busy times ahead, better get some sleep, so I can watch movies on the plane :D
First entry in what I hope to be a long running and not too long winded blog. I’ve actually had this thing since April 2004 and haven’t touched it. But with the new year and all, I’ve decided that it’s time to let people know about me and what I’m doing, hence Blogness. Some people know, some people don’t, some people think they know but have no idea!! So let me set the record straight. My name is Samuel Law, but people call me Sam, Jacques De, CHONG, that guy in white that dances real good. First and foremost I am a faithful child of God, although at times it doesn’t seem that way. I am on the path to becoming a designer, after completing a Diploma and Certificate IV in Multimedia in 2003, but that doesn’t seem to be working out for me at this present time, although I’m confident that God will lead me to a place where I am happy, productive and challenging myself and other people. But that’s enough about me for now, I don’t generally like to blow my own horn. If you stick with this blog for long enough you’ll get to know me and my nature, and hopefully discover different facets of my varying personality in all it’s glory. On to what I actually wanted to talk about today… CHONGLAND is going v2.0. It’s been a long time coming, but I’ve finally got enough effort and stayability to go ahead and revamp the site. Within the month the rebuild should be complete, but for the moment it will be blog and forums on CHONGLAND whilst I’m jetsetting across Asia and such. ETA on something will be in a couple of days. So check CHONGLAND then and sign up for forums and get interacting with me, or check CHONGLAND now and see what I’ve done in the past.
