The Dark Knight

I went to see The Dark Knight; the second Batman movie as directed by Christopher Nolan starring Christian Bale as Batman with Geoff, Pete, Gareth and Nat last Saturday. It was really well done and very enjoyable, and definitely eligible to go down as Heath Ledger‘s legacy film. He’s potentially up for a Posthumas Oscar award, of which only 1 actor has ever been awarded to Peter Finch in 1976 for his performance in Network.

The film differs a fair bit from the first outing with a much darker tone and feel, and I suppose that there’s a little more emotional connections developed as the characters develop. There’s also plenty of action and explosions mixed into the 2 and 1/2 hour outing. Visually the effects are very well done, but alas, I cannot go into too much detail without revealing some surprises in the film which were very very well kept in the dark throughout the trailers; only hinted at once which I eluded to in an earlier post [The Dark Knight ].

As for sequels, there wasn’t a real open end to the movie, so nothing obvious, but a couple of threads to dangle on.

Next up on the DC comics movie list is the strangely interesting Watchmen a comic from 1986 about an alternate history where superheroes are a regular feature of everyday life. I’m looking into the comics and should be able to elaborate shortly, but for now, enjoy the trailer which looks visually sound, although I’m not sure how well the story will play out.

Marvel Movies

On the back of Iron Man doing so well there’s been announcements of more Marvel based movies coming out!!! How Exciting!!!!!

This year we have The Incredible Hulk and Punisher: War Zone due to release: sequels to Hulk and Punisher from 2003 and 2004 respectively. Next year sees hopefully the first in a series of X-Men Origins films with X-Men Origins: Wolverine releasing, definitely a great and mysterious character to get a movie treatment.

2010 has been proclaimed as the year that Tony Stark will return in a second Iron Man movie as well as Thor the mythical God of Thunder to appear with his mighty hammer.

Then in 2011, Captain America will hit the big screen in the Red, White and Blue, followed by The Avengers around July!!

How exciting is all of this!!!  Marvel and DC getting involved with movies is definitely a good thing!!!  For more Marvel madness, be sure to check out their site:

American Gangster – My Man… My Soul Brother

Last night I went to see American Gangster with 2 current and 2 former MTS (Ministry Training Strategy) guys for the bargain price of $10.

The film is based on a true story about Frank Lucas, an African-American ‘gangster’ and his life of heroin importation to America. Initially the film starts out fleshing out the main characters Frank Lucas, portrayed by Denzel Washington, and Detective Richie Roberts, portrayed by Russell Crowe, and it does this quite well. As the film progresses, it opens up more and more to the way that Roberts and the police work through their dealings with drugs, and the methods Lucas and other gangsters conduct themselves.

The end of the film rushes through what happened after the police busted Lucas, which is a little disappointing seeing as it doesn’t explain a lot and henceforth doesn’t continue to develop Lucas’ and Roberts’ characters enough to explain the quite surprising ending, however with the film being 156mins long, it is understandable…

I’d have to say it’s the best movie I’ve seen this year, and I highly recommend anyone to go and see it. There are some disturbing scenes involving blood, guns and drug use, so be wary of that and the language is colorful.

A great start to a year with movies with several good movies to come.

Rich & Fearless

I just saw ‘The Aviator‘ with JamesShaunRodAmy and Big Pauly. It was an interesting film with many ups and downs. I find it amazing the calibre of mind that rich people have, when I say rich, I mean rich business people generally. They seem to be able to come up with these large scale ideas that are pretty risky, yet they have almost no qualms about it (well, nothing visible). I don’t believe I’ll be a rich businessman anytime soon, cause I have trouble deciding what to buy at the grocery store, and fearless?? well, I’m even afraid to talk to certain girls… Nuff Said!!!
